Job Summary

Barts Health NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Management Accountant to join its finance team. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, pro-active, and possess excellent planning, organisational, verbal, and written communication skills. The post holder will support the Finance Manager, their deputy, and service area teams by providing analytical support, financial and business knowledge, and presenting complex financial information to clinical and non-clinical colleagues. They will constructively challenge aspects of service area financial performance and processes to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.

This role offers the opportunity to produce monthly budget statements and financial reports, contributing to both service area board meetings and the Trust’s internal and external corporate reporting.

Main Duties

  • Assist the Senior Manager in delivering a full professional financial service to the service area.

  • Prepare monthly budget statements and financial reports, analysing variances and trends according to Trust reporting timetables.

  • Manage production of service area budget reports from the ledger, investigating variances, and implementing necessary actions.

  • Ensure a customer-focused service is maintained with high levels of support to the service area.

  • Implement and maintain rigorous financial controls for expenditure and WTEs.

  • Contribute to the development of costing and pricing models within a complex and demanding environment.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Essential: Degree level education or equivalent experience; willingness to work towards a CCAB qualification.

  • Desirable: Part-qualified CCAB or CIMA.

Experience

  • Essential: Financial management experience using accounting principles, reconciliations, reporting, and monitoring processes.

  • Desirable: Experience in financial management and month-end reporting.

Knowledge

  • Essential: Up-to-date knowledge of NHS developments and finance policies.

  • Desirable: Knowledge of NHS funding and regulations (NHSI, NHSE, ICS, Local Authority).

Skills

  • Essential: Ability to produce financial statements, analyse complex data, explain financial information to non-finance managers, and meet strict timetables. Proficiency in financial systems and Microsoft Office, especially Excel. Excellent interpersonal, numerical, written, and verbal skills.

  • Desirable: Ability to proactively manage workload, question and challenge non-financial managers, and produce narrative reports highlighting key financial issues.

  • Essential: Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, demonstrate commitment to personal development, and maintain a professional, proactive attitude.
