Job Summary

The UHL-UHN Group is undergoing significant transformation, implementing innovative clinical models and AI-based systems. A core part of this change is evolving digital systems to ensure clinical services and management processes are modern, safe, effective, and well governed.

The Digital Communications Manager (DCM) will develop and implement impactful communications and engagement plans for the One Digital programme, particularly the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) programme. The role ensures communications align with organisational strategies and objectives.

This position is hosted within the UHL communications team but will work closely with colleagues across UHN and the Digital and Data department.

Key Responsibilities

Communications Planning & Delivery

  • Lead communications strategy for the EPR programme and associated projects

  • Develop and coordinate creative, accurate, and effective materials for staff, stakeholders, and the public (e.g., web pages, newsletters, media releases, presentations)

  • Coordinate and facilitate events, workshops, and engagement sessions

  • Liaise with third-party suppliers to ensure co-ordinated communications

  • Collect and analyse data to evaluate communications activities and adapt plans accordingly

  • Respond to media enquiries and complex organisational situations in line with governance and policy

  • Ensure all communications meet NHS corporate identity and Trust brand guidelines

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as an ambassador for the EPR programme

  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external contacts

  • Engage staff and ensure timely communication across Trust channels

  • Work closely with senior managers and project teams

Leadership & Team Contribution

  • Provide specialist communications guidance and training

  • Supervise Communications Officers assigned to projects

  • Promote effective teamwork, wellbeing, and continuous improvement

  • Contribute to departmental and project meetings

  • Ensure equality and clinical safety impact assessments are applied to communications and policies

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree or equivalent knowledge

  • Specialist knowledge of digital and visual communications

  • Evidence of professional development in communications and engagement

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate PR, journalism, or marketing qualification (e.g., CIM, CIPR)

  • Professional membership relevant to communications or marketing

Experience

Essential:

  • Delivering communications for complex projects

  • Digital communications, including web and social media

  • Internal/external communications and media relations

  • Handling complex or sensitive information

Desirable:

  • NHS engagement and communications experience

  • Large-scale system change support

  • Team leadership in a matrix environment

Skills & Competencies

  • Planning and coordinating communications campaigns and events

  • Excellent organisation and ability to work under pressure

  • Strong analytical, judgment, and decision-making skills

  • Effective relationship building and stakeholder management

  • Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion

Other Requirements

  • Ability to work across multiple hospital sites
