Job Summary

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust is offering a permanent opportunity for a Deputy Finance Manager to join the Black Country Pathology Service. Reporting to the Clinical Finance Manager, the role involves leading a Financial Management team to ensure effective use of financial resources in line with divisional and corporate goals.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting budget setting, financial planning, forecasting, and monthly reporting.

  • Providing financial advice to Clinical Directors, Divisional Managers, Budget Holders, and Corporate Finance.

  • Representing the Chief Financial Officer at divisional and departmental meetings.

This role is based at New Cross Hospital with the option of agile working, combining on-site and remote work.

Main Duties

  • Deliver high-quality financial support and advice to specified divisions and support services.

  • Supervise a finance team, ensuring accurate financial information and adherence to professional standards.

  • Lead monthly management accounting processes, including provisions, reporting, and forecasting.

  • Meet with divisional staff and budget holders to review financial positions and plan corrective actions.

  • Advise on cost improvement targets, income generation, service developments, and business planning.

  • Support financial analysis for business cases, including Trust Management Committee and ICS presentations.

  • Monitor risks to financial breakeven and advise Finance Manager accordingly.

  • Participate in annual business planning, budget setting, and training for managers on financial procedures.

  • Ensure accurate completion of Patient Level Costs/Reference Costs and other costing returns.

  • Lead the finance team in Trust accounts processes, complying with external audit requirements.

  • Deputise for the Finance Manager at divisional and senior finance meetings as required.

  • Maintain continuous professional development (CPD) in line with accountancy professional standards.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Essential: Qualified AAT with substantial NHS management accounting experience.

  • Desirable: Fully qualified CCAB accountant or final stage of study.

Experience & Skills

  • Essential: Senior management accounts experience, leading business planning and budget processes, supervising staff, advanced Microsoft Office and Excel skills, strong analytical and decision-making skills.

  • Desirable: NHS management accounts experience, budget setting for complex services, finance system development (VBA/SQL), improving efficiency via ledger packages.

Other Requirements

  • CPD engagement, confidentiality awareness, effective communication across all levels, ability to manage multiple projects independently.
