About the Role
The Capital Accountant is responsible for managing the Foundation Trust’s capital accounting section. This includes ensuring accurate recording of land, buildings, and equipment on the asset register, monitoring the annual capital expenditure budget, and ensuring compliance with Standing Financial Instructions (SFIs).
The role supports the production of statutory accounts, maintains financial systems and the asset register, and provides recruitment, training, and coaching for Capital Accounting staff, including line management of junior team members such as the Assistant Capital Accountant.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, organise, and supervise the Capital Accounting Section to ensure accurate recording of Trust assets, including IFRS16 assets
Ensure capital expenditure complies with accounting standards, the Government Accounting Manual (GAM), and Trust SFIs
Support the Associate Director of Financial Services with financial reporting to the Group Capital Committee, NHSE, and the Greater Manchester Integrated Care
Provide asset register data for depreciation calculations, ad hoc revaluations, and impairments
Manage the year-end process for capitalisation of assets in line with international accounting standards
Prepare information for statutory accounts and financial returns
Recruit, train, and line manage Capital Accounting staff, including workload planning and hands-on coaching
Ensure daily, weekly, and monthly reporting timetables are met
Qualifications & Skills
Essential:
CCAB qualified or equivalent professional body (significant experience recognised)
Ability to concentrate on complex analysis and reporting for prolonged periods
Motivated and goal-focused, with a drive to improve performance
Desirable:
Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification/experience
Capital accounting experience in NHS, including IFRS16
