Job Overview
The Financial Accountant role at Barts Health NHS Trust supports the Associate Director of Finance – Financial Services in delivering all aspects of financial accounting services.
The position focuses on banking services, cash management, ledger integrity, and financial reporting, ensuring compliance with statutory regulations, standing financial instructions, and internal procedures.
This role also contributes to performance monitoring information, including Board reporting, statutory accounts, and external financial returns.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting Line
The post holder will report to the Deputy Financial Controller.
Core Duties
Maintain accurate daily records of all receipts, payments, and bank statements
Perform daily reconciliation of all bank statements
Update the Trust’s cash position daily and forecast short- and immediate-term cash requirements
Liaise daily with the Trust’s commercial bankers and the Government Banking Service
Ensure up-to-date statements and forecasts are obtained for effective account management

Job Description
Operational Responsibilities
Invest cash with institutions authorised by the DHSC in line with the Trust’s Investment Policy
Use daily bank information and cash flow forecasts to determine available cash surpluses and investment periods
Load all bank statements electronically into the Cash Management system on a daily basis
Reconcile bank statements daily with Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable ledgers
Investigate discrepancies and liaise with AP and AR staff to resolve adjustments
Maintain up-to-date bank mandates, signatures, and banking records
Ensure relevant banking information is readily available when required
Inform Trust managers and staff of operational matters affecting them
Assist in developing and implementing new banking procedures due to regulatory or organisational changes
Ensure all cash is correctly recorded and identified within the Year End timetable
Person Specification
Experience
Essential
Experience within finance, including maintenance of cashbooks and ledgers
Strong understanding of financial controls and control accounts
Experience using finance systems
Minimum of 3 years’ finance experience, including financial accounting
Knowledge
Essential
Working knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping
Desirable
Knowledge of NHS funding and regulation (NHSI/E, ICB, Local Authority)
Qualifications
Essential
Educated to Degree level or equivalent experience
Desirable
Willingness to work towards a CCAB qualification

Strong prioritisation and workload planning skills
Ability to meet strict deadlines and work independently
High competence with computerised financial systems
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Outlook
Ability to work with non-finance managers as a first point of contact
Excellent numerical, written, and verbal communication skills
Strong interpersonal and team-working skills

Ability to manipulate complex datasets to support decision-making
Experience producing narrative financial reports highlighting key issues
