The Estates department at Furness General Hospital consists of highly skilled electrical and mechanical engineers, creative building craftspersons, and dedicated support staff.

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic electrician. Candidates should be experienced, time-served, and suitably qualified in an electrical trade, plant maintenance, or fault finding.

Main Duties

This is a highly rewarding role. Reporting to the Electrical Estates Officer, the successful candidate will:

  • Carry out electrical maintenance and installation work within acute and community NHS properties.

  • Work on power and lighting systems, electrical heating, motors, lifts, and backup generators.

  • Receive additional training to work on systems such as ventilation, air conditioning, and other healthcare-related electrical services.

  • Work independently and as part of a team, ensuring patient and staff safety remains a priority.

  • Assist other trades and undertake other tasks to maintain building services when required.

  • Communicate effectively at all levels and demonstrate self-motivation.

A healthcare background is advantageous but not essential, as specific training will be provided.

About East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust operates from three main hospitals:

  1. Furness General Hospital (FGH) – Barrow

  2. Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI)

  3. Westmorland General Hospital (WGH)

Additionally, the Trust manages community healthcare premises, including Millom Hospital, GP Practices, and Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe.

  • FGH and RLI provide full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units, and Consultant-led services.

  • RLI also includes an Urgent Treatment Centre for non-life-threatening conditions.

  • All three hospitals provide planned care, including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case, and inpatient surgery.

  • Community facilities across Morecambe Bay provide local outreach services and diagnostics.

Person Specification

Education & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Full apprenticeship or equivalent approved training

  • NVQ3, BTEC, or equivalent

Desirable:

  • Further City and Guilds qualifications in relevant subjects

  • 18th Edition Electrical Regulations

  • PAT testing certificate

  • Driving licence (B+E)

Experience

Essential:

  • Experience with safe systems of work in engineering, construction, or manufacturing

Desirable:

  • Experience with BMS systems

  • Healthcare experience

  • Experience with commercial or industrial large-scale electrical plant

Skills, Ability & Knowledge

Essential:

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with colleagues, non-technical staff, patients, visitors, public utilities, and emergency services

  • Ability to handle information sensitively and confidentially

  • Computer literate

Desirable:

  • Ability to guide, lead, and train apprentices or trainees
