Job Summary

Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a Financial Accountant (General Ledger) to join the Finance Department. The position is full-time (37.5 hours per week) and based at Knowsley Community College.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Updating and monitoring the Trust’s ROU asset register.

  • Preparation and review of the Trust’s Charitable Funds accounts.

  • Remeasurement and monitoring of provisions.

  • Reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.

  • Supporting the Assistant Director of Finance – Financial Services with internal and external reporting, including monthly management accounts and statutory year-end accounts.

  • Assisting with the year-end external audit and providing relevant information.

Main Duties

ROU Asset Register

  • Maintain accurate records for ROU asset capital accounting on the Finance General Ledger and the Trust ROU asset register.

  • Conduct regular reconciliations to support accurate production of the Trust Balance Sheet.

  • Liaise with budget holders, divisional managers, and the Assistant Director of Finance regarding additions, cessations, upgrades, replacements, damaged, or obsolete assets.

  • Highlight issues to the Assistant Director of Finance and support resolution.

General Ledger

  • Assist with statutory annual accounts preparation.

  • Participate in national agreement of balances exercises.

  • Coordinate internal and external balance sheet reconciliations, including salary sacrifice schemes.

  • Communicate with internal (management accounts, payroll) and external (customers, suppliers) stakeholders.

  • Perform complex reconciliations and actions such as journal corrections or raising invoices.

  • Analyse and manage complex financial data using Oracle Finance System, Business Intelligence, and Excel spreadsheets.

Charitable Funds

  • Manage the Charitable Funds ledger and supervise the Charitable Funds Officer.

  • Prepare Charitable Funds accounts in line with the latest SORP.

  • Provide financial information and analysis for the Trust’s Charitable Funds sub-committee and Head of Charity.

Provisions

  • Maintain spreadsheets for accurate provision calculations for pensions, employer/public liability claims, and permanent injury benefits.

  • Ensure compliance with the latest technical accounting guidance.

Clinical and Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain professional registrations as required.

  • Adhere to the relevant professional code of practice.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Ensure all procedure notes and forms comply with departmental policies and audit requirements.

Teaching and Training Responsibilities

  • Participate in annual performance development reviews.

  • Attend statutory and mandatory training sessions.

Line Management/Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Manage staff on a day-to-day basis.

  • Conduct annual performance reviews as required.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Essential: CCAB qualification

Knowledge and Experience

  • Significant financial accounting experience.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • NHS finance experience.

  • Experience with Oracle General Ledger System and Business Intelligence.

  • Ability to train and support others in specialist area.

  • Experience analysing, interpreting, and presenting complex financial data.

  • Highly computer literate (MS Word, Excel, Access).

Skills

  • Excellent communication, including conveying complex financial information to non-finance managers.

  • Professionalism in dealings with colleagues and external bodies.

  • Good written communication skills.

  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, planning, and organisational skills.

  • Ability to negotiate, influence, manage conflicting priorities, and work under pressure.

  • Attention to detail for prolonged periods when analysing or inputting data.

Additional Requirements

  • DBS check required (Disclosure and Barring Service).

  • Skilled worker sponsorship available for eligible applicants.

  • Criminal record certificates required for skilled worker applicants living in other countries for 12+ months in the last 10 years.

  • Current UK professional registration required.
