Main Duties of the Job

Cumberland Children and Family Wellbeing is seeking Newly Qualified Social Workers to join the Children’s Academy for Social Care, where structured support is provided to help develop strong social work practice.

The role focuses on:

  • Improving outcomes for children and young people in Cumbria
  • Listening to children, young people, and families
  • Assessing needs and working collaboratively to provide support
  • Planning, delivering, and evaluating services for individuals and groups
  • Working within a team and managing a caseload under supervision
  • Supporting community wellbeing and service user development

Academy Support for Newly Qualified Social Workers

Newly Qualified Social Workers will spend up to 6 months in the Academy before moving into locality teams.

Support includes:

  • 2-week induction with workshops, shadowing, and reflective supervision
  • No family caseload during induction period
  • Assigned Team Manager as ASYE Assessor
  • Fortnightly supervision for 6 months, then monthly thereafter
  • Monthly learning and development workshops
  • Protected time for ASYE portfolio tasks
  • Structured 1:1 supervision throughout ASYE
  • Gradual caseload build-up based on skills and experience
  • No child protection or public law court work within first 12 months
  • Post-ASYE career development framework and continued support

Person Specification

Qualifications and Requirements

Essential:

  • Social Work Degree
  • Social Work England registration
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Experience working with children and families
  • Understanding of social work theory and practice
  • Knowledge of assessment, case management, and outcome-based planning
  • Awareness of relevant legislation
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to manage risk and workload effectively
  • Professional integrity, reliability, and consistency
  • Ability to work under pressure and emotional stress
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
  • Willingness to travel extensively within the area

Desirable:

  • Experience in child protection
  • Knowledge of children’s services assessment tools

Additional Requirements

DBS Check

This role is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.

Sponsorship

Skilled Worker sponsorship applications are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applicants.

Overseas applicants may be required to provide criminal record certificates depending on residency history.

UK Registration

Applicants must have current UK professional registration.
