How to Make Scented Soy Candles

Who needs to spend a fortune on luxury candles when you can craft stunning, clean-burning, and custom-scented soy candles right in your own kitchen? At HUBGH, we love this project because it’s deeply satisfying, incredibly budget-friendly, and a wonderful way to eliminate the toxic chemicals often found in commercial paraffin waxes. Soy wax, derived from soybeans, burns cleaner and slower than traditional wax, making it the perfect sustainable choice for a cozy, fragrant home. Grab your thrifted jars and your favorite essential oils—let’s transform simple flakes into beautiful, personalized light!
The Sustainable Starter Kit: Materials You’ll Need
- The Wax: Soy Wax Flakes (easy to find online or at craft stores). Soy is renewable, natural, and cleans up easily with soap and water.
- The Container (Upcycled Star): Repurposed Glass Jars (old jam, baby food, or sauce jars), ceramic teacups, or even small metal tins. Crucially: Ensure the container is heat-safe, non-flammable, and has no cracks.
- The Scent: Essential Oils or Candle-Specific Fragrance Oils. For a strong, natural scent, essential oils work best, but you’ll need a higher concentration than synthetic oils.
- The Wick: Pre-tabbed Cotton Wicks (sized appropriately for your jar width—too small causes tunneling, too large burns too fast).
- The Tools: A large pot (for the double boiler), a heat-safe metal pitcher or glass bowl, a Candy Thermometer, and Chopsticks or Clothespins to hold the wick.
Simple Steps for a Strong-Scented Candle
Step 1: Prep Your Containers and Wicks. Make sure your chosen jars are spotless and completely dry. Take one pre-tabbed wick and secure the metal base to the exact center of the container bottom. You can use a dab of superglue, a hot glue gun, or a specialized wick sticker. To keep the wick upright, center the top end between a pair of chopsticks or a clothespin resting horizontally across the jar’s rim.
Step 2: Melt the Wax with a Double Boiler. Weigh your soy wax flakes. A good rule of thumb is that for every 1 cup of liquid wax your jar holds, you need about 2 cups of solid flakes. Fill the large pot halfway with water and bring it to a simmer (your double boiler). Place the wax flakes in the metal pitcher and set the pitcher in the simmering water. Allow the wax to melt slowly, stirring occasionally until it is fully clear and liquid, like olive oil. Monitor the temperature with the thermometer.
Step 3: Add the Scent at the Right Temperature. The key to a strong-smelling candle (known as a good “hot throw”) is adding the fragrance at the correct temperature.
- Remove the melted wax from the heat when it reaches about 185°F (85°C).
- Allow the wax to cool naturally to about 130°F–140°F (55°C–60°C) before adding your essential oils. Adding them when the wax is too hot will cause the scent to evaporate.
- Scent Ratio: Use about 1 ounce of fragrance/essential oil for every pound of wax (a 6% fragrance load is a great starting point for beginners). Gently stir the oils into the cooling wax for at least one full minute to ensure the oil is fully bound.
Step 4: Pour and Cure. Carefully pour the wax into your prepared jars, leaving about a half-inch of space at the top. Ensure the wick remains perfectly centered. Allow the candles to cool and set completely at room temperature on a stable, flat surface for at least 24 hours. Do not move them while they are setting! Once fully hard, remove the chopsticks/clothespin.
Step 5: Trim and Wait. Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch above the wax surface. Pro Tip: Soy candles benefit significantly from a curing time of about one to two weeks before their first burn. This allows the fragrance to fully bind to the wax, resulting in a much stronger scent throw when lit.
Creative Styling & Custom Scents
- Earthy Scents: Mix Sandalwood and Cedarwood for a grounding, woodsy fragrance, perfect for a cozy living room.
- Kitchen Refresh: Blend Lemon (or Grapefruit) and a drop of Rosemary for a crisp, clean scent that cuts through cooking odors.
- Bedroom Calm: Combine Lavender and Bergamot for a soothing, stress-relieving aroma.
- Finishing Touches: Once the candle is cured, customize the jar. Tie a piece of jute twine or ribbon around the neck, or create a minimalist paper label with a handwritten scent name and the date you made it.
Why You’ll Love This Project
Sustainability: You reduce waste by repurposing old glass containers and using a sustainable, plant-based wax that is biodegradable.
