Job Purpose

This role is central to developing and implementing the communications and public engagement strategy for the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR), strengthening internal and external communication, building capacity, developing partnerships, and promoting CVR work. The position involves planning, coordinating, delivering and evaluating the CVR’s communication strategy and supporting CVR staff and students in delivering their own public engagement activities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the CVR Research Manager in delivering the CVR’s five-year Public Engagement and Communications (PEC) Strategy, with emphasis on communications.
  • Develop and manage internal communication channels to engage and inform CVR staff.
  • Create innovative solutions for effective external stakeholder engagement.
  • Monitor relevant social and media feeds and report findings to the Director.
  • Prepare written and graphic content for web and print in collaboration with designers and external suppliers.
  • Coordinate CVR website development and manage social media content creation.
  • Produce reports, graphics, and presentations for leadership and contribute to quinquennial reviews.
  • Coordinate internal newsletter content.
  • Organise high-profile events such as seminars, academic meetings, and international conferences.
  • Maintain records of CVR PEC activities and evaluations for funder reporting.
  • Support preparation of research activity reports and related support tasks.
  • Coordinate stakeholder visits, including journalists, parliamentarians, and patient groups.
  • Liaise with University and MRC communications teams regarding publications and press visits.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to enhance engagement and communications opportunities.
  • Contribute to impact and communication plans for grant applications.
  • Support enhancement of the University’s international profile under the Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

  • Ability to demonstrate required competencies through experience in similar roles
  • OR SCQF Level 9 (Ordinary Degree, SVQ Level 4) or equivalent with relevant experience

Desirable

  • BSc or equivalent in biomedical subject
  • Qualification in science communication

Skills

Essential

  • Science writing for print and web with ability to interpret scientific material
  • Strong communication skills for complex material delivery
  • Ability to engage wide audiences
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and prioritise workload
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Competence in digital systems, databases, and communication tools

Desirable

  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Project management experience
  • Use of digital equipment (cameras, recording tools)

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial experience in a similar communications role or equivalent experience
  • Experience managing communication initiatives from start to finish
  • Experience producing web and multimedia content
  • Experience working in complex, multi-stakeholder environments

Desirable

  • Supporting researchers in public communication
  • Website management and social media use
  • Event management experience
  • Experience producing reports, databases, and presentations using IT tools

Hybrid working may be available after probation, typically requiring three days on campus and up to two days working from home.

This is a fixed-term full-time role (35 hours per week), covering maternity leave for up to 12 months. Part-time arrangements may be considered.
