Role Summary

Social Security Scotland is seeking a Senior Cyber Security Engineer to help secure the cloud platforms that deliver vital public services. This is a key role in a cloud-first organisation, focused on ensuring solutions are secure by design, resilient, and compliant.

The Senior Cyber Security Engineer leads the design, implementation, and assurance of cyber security controls across cloud platforms, applications, and infrastructure. The role involves translating security policy and risk into practical cloud security solutions while working closely with Architecture, Cloud Engineering, DevOps, and Product teams.

Acting as a technical authority, the role provides hands-on expertise, assurance, and risk-based guidance, embedding security throughout the delivery lifecycle.

Main Responsibilities

The Cyber Security Engineer builds, develops, and configures tooling and processes to ensure security across systems, including pre-commit, Continuous Integration, Continuous Deployment through to production.

The role involves experience in operating systems, networking, PKI, and cloud security tools, as well as building secure configuration management using Infrastructure as Code.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying, designing, and developing cyber security solutions across applications and infrastructure
  • Leading implementation of cyber security policy and standards
  • Providing senior cyber security consultancy (risk assessments, audits, and strategy development)
  • Supporting technology architecture design and collaborating with Architecture teams
  • Engaging with stakeholders to provide cyber security assurance and manage security change processes

Main Duties

  • Design and deliver secure cloud architectures across IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS environments
  • Lead implementation of cyber security standards and controls across cloud platforms
  • Provide cyber security consultancy including risk assessments, threat modelling, architecture reviews, audits, and strategy input
  • Work with Architecture teams to shape secure target architectures
  • Lead cloud security operations including identity and access management, vulnerability management, logging, monitoring, and incident response
  • Design automated security controls including policy as code, secure configuration baselines, and continuous compliance
  • Translate security requirements into engineering guidance for developers and engineers
  • Engage with stakeholders to provide assurance and support security-driven change
  • Act as a technical mentor and promote cloud security best practices
  • Design and implement secure cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and CloudFormation

Success Profiles

Social Security Scotland uses the ‘Success Profiles’ assessment framework.

Essential Experience

  • Implementing cloud-native security controls (IAM, encryption, key management, logging, monitoring)
  • Embedding security across the full delivery lifecycle (design to live operations)
  • Creating or implementing automated security controls and assurance using Infrastructure as Code

Technical / Professional Skills

This role is aligned to Senior Cyber Security Engineer within the Government Digital, Data and Technology Profession. These skills are assessed during the Technical Assessment stage, not at application stage.

Working Pattern

  • Standard hours: 35 hours per week
  • Hybrid working with minimum 2 days per week in Glasgow or Dundee offices
  • Location: Glasgow or Dundee (in-person requirement)
  • Occasional flexibility based on role needs

Security Requirements

Successful candidates must complete:

  • Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS)
  • Additional National Security Vetting (Security Check) before start date

Sponsorship Information

Social Security Scotland is an approved sponsor under the UK Skilled Worker visa route. Eligibility depends on current UK immigration rules, which may change.
